2. Remove him from the situation if he is too excited to use any self-control. If he begins jumping, simply remove him from the situation so that he learns jumping or other out-ofcontrol behaviors will cause him to lose the opportunity to greet someone.
If he is too out of control to greet people, then you might need to break things down into smaller steps and progress more slowly. Let’s say that your dog jumps and has very little self-control when anyone pays any attention to him. Breaking this down into smaller steps means you will start with a person who is located much farther away. If your dog can sit quietly and pay attention to you with someone standing twenty feet away, start there. Then see if he can remain sitting quietly when the person steps closer. Next, see if he remains sitting quietly when someone talks to you or him from ten feet away. If not, then back up and try from farther away. See if the person can stand that close without talking. Once the person is able to stand directly in front of you, try speaking to the person with your dog sitting quietly and receiving no attention.
Once you feel your dog is ready, try having him remain sitting quietly while the person looks at your dog or says, “Hello,” but does not touch him. Your dog might sit calmly if no one pays attention to him, but as soon as someone acknowledges his existence, he might go wild. Other dogs have the opposite problem: they can’t stand it when no one pays attention to them, so they act out when being ignored.
If your dog is doing well, you can proceed more quickly. But if he’s having trouble, take time to consider how you can break things down into smaller steps. Think of each piece of the situation: distance; which way the person is facing; whether the person is standing, sitting or crouching down; whether or not the person is moving, talking, looking directly at your dog, or reaching toward or touching your dog; where the person is touching your dog (top of the head, shoulder, back, etc.); and, whether the person is an adult, teenager, or child.
When socializing your dog to people, it might make a difference whether you are at home or in public. Some dogs will act very differently in the comfort of their home than they will in places that are less familiar. Take note if your dog reacts differently in different locations. If he does, then you will have more work to do in socializing your dog in different places.
